Dear Sabrina,

Dear Sabrina,

I just want to tell you how blessed I am to have you!

These past few weeks have been extremely hard on you (and very frustrating for me, as your mom).

First, I got sick. Your care and concern for me were more than I ever expected. You helped your dad out and were (and always are) the best big sister! When I heard you pray for me to get well, I knew I had to give everything in me to get better!

Then, you found out some dear friends are moving waaaay across the country. It's so hard to have friends leave and it seems to happen often to us. Besides, the Lopez's always seem to come back and we are fortunate to have them in our lives no matter where they go!

In the same week, you lost a dear friend and teammate, Jalen, to brain cancer at the young age of 15. I know this broke your heart as he was such a great inspiration to you in running. He will continue to inspire our whole family and we will think of him every time you run. As Jalen said, "be strong and have faith." This family's tragedy has made our family stronger and we will forever be grateful for their influence in our life.

Right after that you got notice that you might have to switch schools for middle school (to a school that is horrible, to say the least). I noticed that you looked to me and your dad to protect you from this happening and I hope we didn't fail you in our fight for you to go to the right place for middle school. We want the best for you. And you deserve the best. We will do whatever it takes to get you to where you belong!

Then to top it all off you didn't make the soccer team that you tried-out for. I thought that you would take it hard...I mean, how much more can one 11 year old girl take. I cried, I didn't want to tell you, I was pissed off. But here's what you said when your dad finally broke the news, " Oh, that's okay...I guess I'll just be on a normal team and do my best". Yes, Sabrina, you do that! And show that team what they are missing out on!!

I'm so sorry that things have not been easy for you lately. I hate times like this. It's times like this that I get a bit too "mama bear" and want to just protect you from it all!! But you handle it all with grace, look at it all as a learning experience, you try harder, you love more, you show what faith means. You, Sabrina, are a wonderful girl!! You make me proud. Now, if only I could be more like you.

I love you with all my heart,

Mom
